The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has represented the interests of professional truckers since 1973. Founded during the energy crisis that nearly paralyzed the trucking industry, OOIDA emerged when a small group of drivers—including the late Jim Johnston, who later served as president for more than four decades—traveled to Washington, D.C. to demand solutions to fuel shortages and skyrocketing costs. What began in a trailer chained to a light pole at a Missouri truck stop has grown into the leading national voice for independent drivers and small-business truckers.

Headquartered in Grain Valley, Missouri, with a fully staffed Government Affairs office in Washington, D.C., OOIDA participates in virtually every major regulatory and legislative action affecting truckers. The association testifies before Congress, contributes to rulemakings, and serves on national and international committees, ensuring that the perspectives of professional drivers are heard at every level. Its 21-member board—elected by the membership—consists entirely of current or former professional truckers.

Beyond advocacy, OOIDA keeps drivers informed through its flagship publication, Land Line Magazine, and the daily Sirius XM radio program Land Line Now. Its subsidiary, Owner-Operator Services, provides cost-saving and safety-focused benefits. With more than 50 years of grassroots advocacy, OOIDA remains dedicated to advancing highway safety, fair regulation, and an equitable environment for America’s truckers.
